The recent award of a contract to a consortium comprising Siemens Energy and Neptun Smulders Offshore Renewables (NSORe) by German transmission system operator 50Hertz marks a significant milestone in the country's energy transition. This deal involves the construction of a converter system for the offshore grid connection project North Sea Connector 2, which will play a crucial role in integrating future offshore wind farms into Germany's electricity grid.
The consortium's responsibilities encompass the entire implementation process, from system design and component procurement to construction, installation, and commissioning. This comprehensive approach ensures a seamless transition from concept to execution.
One of the key aspects of this project is the onshore converters, which will be manufactured at a new substation near Schwerin, in the municipality of Mühlenbeck. This location is strategically chosen as the future endpoint of the NordOstLink HVDC connection, linking the North Sea coast to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The offshore converters, on the other hand, will be installed in the North Sea, approximately 200 km west of the island of Sylt, serving as the interface between the North Sea wind farms and the mainland grid.
Siemens Energy's expertise lies in the high-tech components, including transformers, switchgear, and converters, which are essential for converting alternating current into direct current. Neptun Smulders Offshore Renewables, a joint venture between Neptun Werft and Belgian steel construction company Smulders, will take on the manufacturing of the topside of the offshore platform, housing the transformers, switchgear, and converters.
The project's impact extends beyond the immediate construction phase. It is estimated to create over 500 long-term jobs in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, among the companies involved and their suppliers. The majority of construction and fabrication will take place in Rostock, with Smulders producing the jacket foundation at its shipyard in Vlissingen, the Netherlands.
The contract stipulates the commissioning of North Sea Connector 2 by the end of 2034, marking a significant step towards Germany's ambitious energy transition goals. Moreover, negotiations are underway for another converter platform of similar scale, further solidifying the consortium's role in the country's renewable energy infrastructure.
